I don’t know how it happened, but petrochemical fertilizers and poisonous insecticides are now called “conventional,” while their natural counterparts got shoved aside as fringe products. The same is true of our produce, meat, eggs, and cotton. As consumers we have immense power when we vote with our dollars. Every time we take our hard earned money out of our pockets to buy “conventional” produce, we tell the vendor, “I support irresponsible agriculture and unsafe food.” Every time we spend money on “conventional” fertilizers, we vote for carcinogens in our homes and dangerous chemicals in our water table.
